Escritor americano (Chicago, 23.7.1888 – 26.3.1959) que se iniciou na escrita durante a época da Depressão americana, do início da década de 1930, distinguindo-se como argumentista e guionista cinematográfico: Double Indemnity (1944, de Billy Wilder), The Big Sleep (1946, de Howard Hawks), The Blue Dhalia (1946, de George Marshall), Strangers on a Train (1951, de Alfred Hitchcock, com Patricia Highsmith). Como romancista, o seu terreno é o do policial «negro», tendo criado uma das maiores personagens do género: o detective Philip Marlowe, anti-herói que consegue conservar a dignidade num mundo de criminosos e corruptos. Na sua obra destacam-se obras-primas do género como The Big Sleep (1939), Farewell, My Lovely (1940), The Lady in the Lake (1943), The Long Goodbye (1953), todos eles passados ao cinema.
